Every year, around this time, a battle begins between olive growers and their most feared adversary: the olive fruit fly.
A small yet elusive enemy, always ready to undermine the work done, but one that can be defeated or at least rendered harmless to the quality of the final product.
In many farms, in order to contain costs, integrated strategies are implemented based on the use of plant protection products which, willingly or not, leave residues both on the soil and, even if in minimal proportions, in the oil.
We are convinced that quality must always be sought within the context of respect for nature and people, and therefore we use only devices and products that are authorized in organic farming.
The Fly Dacus Trap (see photo) is a trap made up of an inverted yellow cone with holes, inside which is placed a pheromone capable of attracting the olive fruit fly (and only that one); once inside the cone, the fly tries to escape but is caught and killed by the insecticide with which the (transparent) lid is coated.
The results are decidedly good, thus avoiding the dispersion of products into the air that could also harm other bird species.
Moreover, the traps are made of fully recyclable plastic and therefore have zero impact.
Obviously, such a strategy has its costs which must somehow be recovered, and this is one of the reasons behind the price difference between a "normal" oil and a "quality" oil.
Spending a few euros more and having the guaranteed certainty of unique quality, unique like our oil.
