In this article we would like to share the importance of a legally compliant label for extra virgin olive oil.
You often see ads on social media from private individuals, in good faith, who advertise their oil with unlikely labels, most of the time not compliant with regulations.
Private individuals who sell oil in excess of family consumption are not allowed to do so, nor to print labels, which would in any case be illegal.
If a private individual wishes, they can "give away" their oil to friends and relatives in anonymous containers.
Next, once you have requested the VAT number assignment certificate (there is a dedicated regime for farmers), you must register your business in the business register in the appropriate section.
If you think you will have annual revenues of less than €7,000 per year, then you can benefit from a special exemption regime that allows you not to keep accounts and not to pay VAT on sales. If you do not have a compliant packaging facility, the oil you intend to publish and sell must be packaged directly at the mill, and you must also include this information on the label.
Oil to be sold to consumers can be packaged in containers of any size but never exceeding 5 liters.
